Rajamouli effect: Remakes become Money Spinners

Published on Wednesday, 6 June 2012 01:16 //

Till most recently, the remake rights of south films used to fetch anything around Rs 75 lakhs to Rs 1 crore. But the stupendous success of 'Rowdy Rathore' (Rajamouli's Vikramarkudu remake) changed the equations. Now, the price of remake rights have gone up to Rs 2 crore to Rs 5 crore.

Rowdy Rathore, which had hit the screens last Friday, collected a massive Rs. 48.5 crore in it's opening weekend. Trade analysts were predicting that this mass masala flick would enter into Rs 100 crore club in its second week itself. As almost all the remakes of South films (ex: Ghajini, Pokiri, Ready, Simham, Bodyguard) were becoming huge hits in Bollywood, the price of rights have been increasing from the past three years or so. The success of 'Rowdy Rathore' has just taken that to the next level.

As a result, South producers were now trying to cash in on the present remake trend in Bollywood. Now, they were quoting astronomical prices for the remake rights of their films. Remakes are now Money Spinners, both for South & Bollywood makers!
