Only top 20 percent of students topping their board exams will be eligible to take the main exam for IITs from 2013.

HRD Minister Kapil Sibal’s proposed format for the Common Entrance Exam replacing IIT JEE consists of two papers – a main exam and an advanced paper.

The announcement was made by the IIT council. This means that only 50,000 students will be eligible to take the advanced exam. It was learnt that this would be held on a separate day.

Sibal did not attend the meeting after claims that he wanted to curb autonomy to the IITs.

IIT faculty and alumni have been vocal in their opposition to the new exam claiming that it was forced on them and that more time was needed to understand the implications.

Both IIT faculty and alumni were also against Sibal’s decision to give 40 percent weightage to board exams stating that the differing standards in board exams would affect the quality students entering the IITs. The HRD Minister has proposed the two entrance exams will balance this.

IIT Delhi and IIT Kanpur have decided to conduct their own entrance exams.
